Our
earliest records indicate that the sprinkler fitters in Chicago
formed a union as early as 1886. It was called Sprinkler Fitters
Union 6087. In 1901 the Sprinkler Fitters Union joined the
United Association of Journeymen Plumbers, Gas Fitters, Steam
Fitters and Steam Fitters Helpers to become Sprinkler Fitters
Local 281. In January of 1902 the president was T. J. Morris,
vice-president R.J. Hughes and secretary was O.S. Anderson. The
financial secretary report of May 8, 1902 showed 73 fitters and
43 helpers upon the books of this local.
As we
complete 108 years with the United Association we currently have
988 journeymen, 289 apprentices, and 246 retired members. Some
of the earliest members of the local have had relatives in the
business to the present day -Cosson, Hagan, Lange, Quaid, Stebe,
and Stocking.
