EVANSTON, IL - A newly installed high-rise sprinkler system could have potentially prevented a huge disaster in Evanston earlier this month.

A kitchen fire on the 11th floor of a building in the 1900 block of Sherman Avenue was extinguished by a sprinkler head activation system on Saturday, March 12, according to the Evanston Fire Department.

Sprinklers in the building had just been installed last November following a retrofitting project of the Cook County Housing Authority and Evanston Fire Prevention Bureau.

“There is no doubt in my mind that the upgrade to the suppression system saved the day for us, but more importantly, the lives of the residents and limited the damage to this property,” Evanston Fire Chief Greg Klaiber said.

One resident of the building was treated for smoke inhalation and hospitalized for follow-up care and three residents were displaced for three days.
